Earlier this year, Blizzard's Warcraft III met with tremendous success, and is still widely played and very popular.Age of Mythology newer make a good fit fellow, with a larger scale and more epic feel.Meanwhile, Medieval: Total War has a level of tactical depth and complexity not found in other strategy games, and Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin uses real-time turn resolutions and extremely realistic military unit to completely reinvent modern Wargaming. With such fierce competition in all areas, it is difficult even for the most outstanding game last year real-time strategy to remain relevant to only a year after they were released. This is really the biggest problem with Battle Realms: Winter of the Wolf, which is technically a pretty solid add-on to last year's typical martial-arts-themed real-time strategy game.Expansion of $ 30 is actually packed with the original game, and so is clearly intended to attract new players into the world of the Battle of Alam not only give those who already have some units again and Battle Realms campaign missions to play with. The original Battle Realms campaign focused on the exiled hero named Kenji, which would be a good leader of the Dragon or the Snake clan and fight to unify the country under the flag. Along the way, he would have to compete with Lotus clan cruel and barbaric Wolf clan. The latter two do not play a central role in the story of Battle Realms, but they are the most prominent figures in this expansion pack, which occurred before the events of the original game. It chronicles the story of Grayback, a Wolf leader who began the campaign with a rebellion against his Lotus-clan enslavers. Grayback must unite and rally the troops and return the Wolf clan to freedom during the 11-mission campaign.
The campaign received from a slow start, because it will be a while until you actually break free of clan Lotus shale mines and can actually start building the base and unit training. You will initially only be satisfied with what you have and go from point to point in a highly scripted missions, but not at all attractive. Using this in-engine cutscenes to push the story along, and while the voice-over is pretty good, close-up unit unattractive blob is not a game. Also - and this has been a problem with Battle Realms along - because you have limited tactical control over your power, a battle in the early stages of the Winter Wolf only require you to sit back and watch.
As a more general criticism of the campaign, it's odd that it focuses on what is arguably the most interesting of the four Battle of Alam 'factions. Units of various styles of martial arts from the first game one of the main attractions - it is a game where you control the armies that look like they came straight from Hong Kong kung fu movies. Clan Wolf's Stone Age-looking barbarians, with their bulging muscles and crude weapons, stood in contrast with other factions and made for an interesting opponent. But Grayback and wild clan can not take the game as well as Kenji and his brothers-in-arms.
